We combat discrimination and fight for civil rights.

We challenge discrimination in almost every situation or location.

We fight any arbitrary discrimination, including racial, gender, national origin, or age discrimination, and stand up for people who have been discriminated against because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability or medical condition, marital status, status as a parent, primary language, immigration status, source of income, or hair style or texture. We challenge discrimination in most places and spaces, including:

Work

We fight discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. We offer advocacy and advice for employees who aren’t hired, are harassed, aren’t promoted, or are demoted or fired because of a protected characteristic or because they belong to a protected class. We offer support for pregnant employees, their partners, and adoptive parents and advocate for workers with disabilities and medical conditions who request reasonable accommodations.

Public Places and Businesses

We offer services for clients who hold businesses, doctors’ offices, hospitals, government locations, restaurants, bars, museums, and other public places accountable for their obligation to provide equal and accessible services to all.

Schools, Camps, and Daycares

Kids deserve care, fairness, and equity. We offer our legal expertise to ensure that children of all backgrounds and with health conditions have access to a free appropriate public education, a safe space to learn, and equal opportunity at schools, camps, preschools, and daycares.

Housing

We represent renters facing discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. We provide advocacy for tenants who aren’t offered housing, whose landlords don’t provide services, or who evict them because of a protected characteristic. We also help people with disabilities work with landlords to ensure they have equal access to housing, so they can navigate their homes, have service animals, or obtain other reasonable accommodations.

We advocate for civil rights for all.

We hold government entities, individuals, public places, and businesses accountable for their obligations to respect civil rights under a variety of California and federal laws, including the Unruh Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Employment and Housing Act, and the Tom Bane Civil Rights Act.

We offer representation for clients fighting for a wide variety of civil rights, including:

  • The right to bodily autonomy, including the right to give informed consent or refusal for medical care in birth, hospital settings, and in doctor’s offices.

  • The right to freedom of speech, assembly, and association, including the right to protest and organize.

  • The right to due process and fair proceedings before the government.

  • The right to equal protection under the law and to be free from arbitrary discrimination.

Our Anti-Discrimination and Civil Rights Services

We assess each client’s needs and goals and form a plan to address the injustice they face. In some situations, we give clients advice about how to navigate a civil rights issue or a discriminatory situation. At times, this can be done in a single phone call. In other cases, it’s best to provide advice in ongoing conversations. Under the right circumstances, we’ll negotiate with whoever has harmed our clients or violated their civil rights to come to a solution without going to court. When its warranted, we file administrative complaints with government agencies or lawsuits in court to vindicate our client’s rights.

We charge hourly rates for consultations and advising. For negotiations, administrative complaints and lawsuits, we charge hourly rates or, in the right situation, take cases on contingency, where we don’t charge a client any fee, unless the person who harmed them compensates them for the harm they’ve suffered.
