We combat discrimination & stand up for civil rights.

We provide a supportive, affirming place for people who have experienced discrimination to understand their rights, advocate for accountability, and pursue meaningful change.

We fight discrimination.

We envision a world without discrimination, where all people are treated with compassion and respect. In service of that vision, we stand up to discrimination at work, in public places and businesses, in doctors’ offices, hospitals, and other medical settings, and in housing. We fight all kinds of discrimination – unfair treatment due to bias because of our client’s race, gender, health conditions or disability, LGBTQIA+ status, age, national origin, language, immigration status, religion or other legally-protected traits. We use an array of civil rights laws, including the California Unruh Civil Rights Act, Fair Employment and Housing Act, and the Tom Bane Civil Rights Act to advocate for more equitable places and spaces.

We ensure people with health conditions & disabilities are treated fairly.

We know what it’s like to navigate the world with health issues and disabilities – it’s why we’re passionate about making the world more inclusive for everyone. We use California’s Disabled Persons Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other civil rights laws to help people with health conditions and disabilities understand their rights, ask for reasonable accommodations, fight discrimination, and advocate for fair treatment.

We partner with non-profits, community groups, & grassroots organizations.

We’re passionate about partnering with community organizations to fight discriminatory practices, policies, and behavior. We specialize in coordinating legal and organizing strategy, and shine when we’re helping organizational, activist, and grassroots clients use the legal system to fight for equal rights for all.

Our Anti-Discrimination Services

We’re compassionate with our clients, but tough on those who violate their rights.

  • When clients experience discrimination, we first listen, so we can understand their experience, how it’s harmed them, and what they’d like to accomplish. We then help our clients understand their rights and options; give honest, direct, and kind advice; and help them formulate a plan that’s tailored to their specific needs and goals.

  • In the right circumstances, we can advocate for our clients without ever going to court. We negotiate for outcomes that ensure businesses respect our clients’ rights and treat people with dignity and respect, and help clients understand when to walk away from negotiations and pursue further legal action.

  • We advocate for accountability, positive change, and fair compensation in administrative complaints with government agencies, such as the California Department of Civil Rights, and in litigation.

We charge a flat fee for consultations, and hourly rates for advising. For negotiations, administrative complaints, and lawsuits, we charge hourly rates or, in select cases, offer contingency fee agreements, where we don’t charge any fee, unless our clients are compensated for the harm they’ve experienced.

If you’re experiencing discrimination at work, or need to request reasonable accommodations from your employer, you can learn more about how we support employees on our Employment Discrimination and Advising Page.

  • "I had the privilege of working with an amazing attorney, Elise Cossart-Daly, who helped me with my discrimination case. Her knowledge, expertise, and dedication were truly exceptional. From the moment I reached out to her, she made me feel heard and supported throughout the entire process. I would highly recommend her. "
